Events
Young Voices regularly offers opportunities throughout the country for our writers, partners and friends to learn about and discuss pressing policy issues— with panels featuring a wide variety of viewpoints. There may not be a consensus by the end of the night, but we can promise you will be leaving more informed (and probably with a couple of new friends). We also host happy hours, holiday parties, and the occasional meetup for our writers. Our schedule is always ramping up, too and we’re often adding new events around the country—and sometimes across the sea! So, please, keep checking back, and register for a Young Voices event in your area!

YOUNG VOICES EVENT: A New Age for Young Texas Gun Owner
Fri, April 21, 2023 | 5:00PM - 8:00PM EDT
Austin, TX
Guns and Texas go together like peanut butter and jelly — but until recently, young adults in Texas weren’t allowed to participate. On August 26, 2022, District Court Judge Mark Pittman ruled that a decades-old Texas law which prevented 18 to 20 year olds from carrying handguns was unconstitutional.
Some cheered the decision. Others are skeptical. Either way, the ruling will undoubtedly reshape Texas gun policy in the years to come. Join Young Voices on April 21st for an evening of conversation, beer, and meeting open-minded people like you!
Moderator Derek Cohen will lead a discussion on the future of firearm policy with Cody Wisniewski, senior attorney for constitutional litigation for the Firearms Policy Coalition. A reception will follow the discussion.
You can expect to hear about the importance of this decision, the constitutional and historical underpinnings that made it happen, and why this discrete issue matters for gun rights in Texas and across the United States.
Moderator: Derek Cohen, PhD, is Vice President of Policy and Right on Crime Senior Fellow. Previously a policy director at Right on Crime, the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s criminal justice reform initiative, Cohen was instrumental in the passage of the First Step Act, federal legislation that borrowed from successful changes to prisons and sentencing that he had helped pass in conservative states. In addition to leading the Foundation’s work on criminal justice, he is also the lead researcher of firearms policy.
Speaker: Cody J. Wisniewski is a Senior Attorney for Constitutional Litigation with Firearms Policy Coalition, where he focuses on Second Amendment and other constitutional questions. He has litigated cases across the United States addressing a variety of firearm rights issues.

YOUNG VOICES EVENT: Does Journalism… Still Exist?
Wed, April 12, 2023 | 6:00PM - 9:00PM EDT
New York, NY
The nobility of the journalistic profession—it used to exist for the vast majority of Americans. No more. Between a pandemic and a couple of incredibly fraught presidential elections, the public has felt manipulated and, as a result, soured by the media class.
Now, media itself is dispersing and American citizens have taken the matter of information relation into their own hands. But that leaves us with a serious question: How do we know who to trust?
If you’ve ever wondered what the next few years look like for the journalism industry, join Young Voices for our first Round Robin in New York City, in partnership with America’s Future.
We’ll be hearing from veteran journalists, Nick Gillespie and Caroline Vik in a conversation on the nature of faith in media and the shape which media will take in a post-truth world.

YOUNG VOICES EVENT: The World with ChatGPT: Will Humanity Fit In?
Thu, February 16, 2023 | 5:30PM EST
Washington DC
ChatGPT. Robots. Consciousness. The sacred human spirit.
Can they all work together in society? That question is, at this point, a pretty old one. But with the advent of ChatGPT, it’s being asked of us all over again. Progress on the AI front is inevitable, and it’s happening faster than we can decide what to do about it. Our economy is shifting, labor is going to change, and the way people spend their time may be radically different in 10 years.
For some, this type of progress inspires hope. For others, dread.
Join Young Voices for an evening of fascinating conversation, disagreement, and persuasion on February 16th. Lincoln Network’s Luke Hogg will moderate a roundtable discussion with some of the leading young thinkers in the AI space, featuring views from all sides of the debate.
